Instructions on how to care for your porcelain
Decorated porcelain

Decorations on KPM porcelain are hand painted and are therefore always different. Gold and platinum decorations in various styles, as well as the colours used for the elaborate floral and landscape paintings, for instance, have bonded permanently with the glaze following the so-called "decorative firing". However, because these colours do not seep into the glaze, but are merely "resting" on it, generally speaking these pieces should be cleaned by hand. Please clean the porcelain in water that is warm to the touch, using a standard washing-up liquid and a soft cloth.

Please do not use any hard sponges or scouring agents. We categorically advise against cleaning this type of porcelain in a dishwasher.

Cleaning in a dishwasher

The cleaning process in a dishwasher is intensified through the addition of high-alkaline detergent and the high temperature of the water. Strong alkaline detergents negatively affect the decoration and glass. High washing temperatures not only amplify the damaging effect, they can also precipitate the adherence of deposits on the items being washed.

White porcelain is dishwasher-safe.

Black-trimmed porcelain (Décor 12 / CANTO) is dishwasher-safe.

Generally speaking, porcelain figurines should be rinsed by hand.

Using a microwave oven

Microwaves negatively affect precious metals. Therefore, handcrafted porcelain decorated with precious metals (gold, platinum) is not suitable for use in microwave ovens.

Undecorated plates and bowls without handles can be used in a microwave. Please note that cavities created for production purposes are sealed after the final firing. This applies, for instance, to sauce boats (KURLAND form), egg cups (ARKADIA / URANIA forms) and dishes and tureens with handles (KURLAND form). When using them in a microwave oven, the heated air expands in the cavities, and may therefore cause the porcelain to shatter. Please understand that damage caused by improper use in microwaves does not represent grounds for a complaint.

Wear caused by cutlery

Unfortunately, wear caused by knives or cutlery (dark streaks on the surface of porcelain), often mistakenly referred to as glaze blemishes, cannot always be avoided. To minimise discolouration, we recommend standard, non-scouring liquid detergent (for example for kitchen surfaces) or special porcelain cleaner.

Food acids

Food and fruit acids cannot damage the glazed surface.

Biscuit porcelain (unglazed porcelain)

Biscuit porcelain is sintered at approximately 1400° C during the second firing (glost firing). During this firing, the porcelain pieces condense to such a degree that impurities are not able to seep into the porcelain. Surface soiling can be removed with an acidic product (concentrated vinegar).

Legal provisions

Certain standards, which are relevant to consumer items that come into contact with food, are complied with, as is verified by continuous checks. In accordance with the EU's "Decree Altering the Consumer Items Decree and the Cosmetics Decree", we have had our porcelain tested by independent testing laboratories. Our products comply with the stipulated limits in accordance with DIN 51032- EN 84/ 500/ EWG.
