The production process
Porcelain production

The production process for porcelain is not a simple one. Even today, it requires an unusual amount of experience, time and dedication. Nothing has changed in terms of the basic components of kaolin (50%), feldspar (25%) and quartz (25%). Only selected raw materials, combined in the correct manner, guarantee the desired top quality. The formula – called the arcanum – is still a closely guarded secret.
Quartz, in combination with other raw materials, is decisive in terms of the strength and stability of the porcelain. Feldspar enables the hardening – sintering – of the body and contributes significantly to the transparency of the porcelain. Mixed with water, the base materials are cleaned through a sieve and freed of foreign matter. After draining the so-called porcelain sludge, the thickened mass – referred to as filter cake in technical terminology – is stored in damp cellars in an atmosphere of nearly 100% humidity. This is called aging.
