Modern (in terms of art, the Modern period begins with Impressionism, starting around 1880)

Asymmetry and abstraction as opposing tendencies replaced the aesthetic programme of New Objectivity, which had been dominant until then. A new experience of life emerged with the avant garde replacing the traditional. "Zeitgeist" is one of the catchwords of the Modern period. A playful approach to forms was propagated.
In the midst of radical change in the 1950s, KPM also opened itself up to the influences of the Modern period in terms of form and painting. Worth mentioning are such artists as Siegmund Schütz, Hubert Griemert and Wolf Karnagel.
Abstract decorative painting points to the influence of non-representational painting.

The Donaueschinger Musiktage festival was inaugurated in the 1950s, which fundamentally changed listening habits (sound fields, so-called clusters, resonated in music). Developing in parallel were colour-field paintings, which dispensed with all representation.
In the world of music, Hans Werner Henze's opera The Young Lord was a triumph. At the same time, Egon Eiermann put forth a new design for the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.
In terms of literature, Heinrich Böll and T.S. Eliot deserve mention, and Ingeborg Bachmann endorsed Existentialism with her cycles of poems.
